about

Maya Pasternak is an independent artist based in Tel Aviv, Israel whose work explores spaces – of dialogue, identity, and human agency. Pasternak is inspired by Allan Kaprow’s proposal of performance as research – into oneself and the society within which one lives.

Maya Pasternak graduated with an Interdisciplinary Arts Degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. In much of her recent work, the artist becomes a quasi-journalist using the interviewing process or the conversation… though somewhere the dialogue has gotten lost in bureaucratic red tape (see Le Bureau Des Questions).

Pasternak gets paid to coordinate the Israeli Center for Digital Art’s international Video Archive and Mobile Archive.

From the catalogue for the International Festival in the Context of Art; the Differences (2006):

Young Canadian artist with Polish-Jewish origins. She studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design where she had her first expositions and performances, and also organized various art conferences. Recently, she invented “non-performances,” a new form of performance art. Her art has always confronted spectators with a strong message.
